1. Plant healthy sets taken from disease free area.

2. Remove and destroy the smutted clump (collect the whips in a thick cloth bag/polythene bag and immerse in boiling water for 1 hr to kill the spores).

3. Providing adequate drainage in the field will also help in avoiding the disease.
